Bob Heil/K9EID was the only microphone manufacturer to be inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame. Bob passed on February 28, 2024. This is our third and final excerpt from Hap Holly/KC9RP's hour-long conversation with Bob conducted in 2018. At the end of part two of Hap's interview, Bob talked about the importance of perimetric equalization in the audio chain of your ham station and computer. I'm using a Heil HM12 as you hear this script.

That's it for our tribute to the late Bob Heil/K9EID, who sold well over 100,000 Heil Sound microphones during his illustrious audio career. If you open up a modern-day ham transceiver, chances are you'll find some of Bob's handywork in the audio section; and you may discover his HC-3 or HC-4 elements in the microphone plugged into your base or mobile transceiver. 73 Bob, you will be sorely missed.

The microphone world has never been quite the same since Bob Heil, K9EID discovered what was missing in modern-day mics, putting the audio world on it virtual 'ear' decades ago. Open up the mic in a modern-day HF radio and chances are you'll find Bob's HC-3 or HC-4 element in it; or some of Bob's handiwork in the radio's audio section. In fact at the time RAIN's Hap Holly, KC9RP interviewed Bob back in 2018, more than 100,000 of his HC elements had been sold worldwide. Unfortunately Bob became a silent key February 28, 2024.

In Bob's memory we're replaying Hap's hour-long conversation with him. this is our 2nd excerpt from that conversation.

It's been almost 9 years since the passing of Bill Pasternak/WA6ITF, the co-founder of Amateur Radio Newsline. You oldtimers may remember Amateur Radio Newsline went under the name of Westlink Radio when Bill co-founded it in 1977. Upon Bill's passing in 2015, his successor had already been named. She's Caryn Murray/KD2GUT, who is in her 9th year now keeping Newsline on an even keel. This is the story of two American airmen who served together in Korea in the 70s, later left the Air Force, went their own ways; and were reunited by chance 26 years later on ham radio in December, 2001. Former RAIN reader Rick Johnson, KD9VZD tells the story.

As a postscript to this intriguing RAIN Report, it is unknown as to how far Joey got into establishing just how much involvement ham radio actually had in the mass suicide at the Peoples' Temple Agricultural Settlement in Jonestown, Guyana. We shall endeavor to bring you an update to this bizarre story.

In May, 2022 a legally blind resident of Janesville, WI studied for and passed the Amateur Radio technician exam to become a ham. She's Ericka Nelson/KD9VBX. Ericka works for the Industries For The Blind in Janesville; has been married five years to Chad/WI9HF; and is referenced by at least one church friend as being "uniquely enabled". Ericka IS unique being a lady ham who is legally blind. RAIN's Hap Holly/KC9RP recently spoke with this energetic lady.

If you are an HF officionado, just how low can you go? According to the ARRL website, U.S. hams could not transmit below 160 meters (1.8 mHz until 2012. That's when the World Administrative Radio Conference voted to reallocate 472-479 kHz (630 meters) and 135.7-137.8 (2200 meters) to the U.S. Amateur Service. In 2019 a retired Green Bay, WI. ham, Tim Selner/ W9SRW let his curiosity get the best of him. RAIN's Hap Holly/KC9RP recently spoke with Tim about life below A.M. radio. In the late 1980s Radio Shack made history in the ham radio world with the introduction of its first Amateur Radio transceiver, the HTDX100 10-meter rig. Radio Shack made history once again in the ham world in 1991 with the release of its first handy-talkie, the HTDX202, a fully functional 2-meter synthesized handy talkie. The introduction of that ht wasn't without its detractors, who predicted the fully synthesized, 12-channel, 2-meter ht would increase illegal activity on the 144-148 mHz 2-meter ham ban with the talkie's being so available in Radio Shack's 7,000 stores nationwide. In a summer, 1991 interview with RAIN Founder, Hap Holly/KC9RP, Ed Juge/W5TOO, Director of Market Planning for Radio Shack, poo-pooed those who predicted trouble on the horizon.

The ad featured Radio Shack's first handy talkie. Just what HT was it? And who did Hap interview in the summer of 1991 from Radio Shack who strongly backed his company's decision to enter the VHF & UHF ham radio market? When you passed your license exam and received your ham radio callsign, you learned that FCC part 97 rules and regs restrict just what bands on which you can operate, how often you are required to i.d. your station, etc. But did you know for years the FCC has been issuing licenses to those in the so-called Experimental Radio Service with far fewer restrictions than your ham ticket? The Shortwave Modernization Coalition has filed a petition with the FCC to advance the experimental service licensees (part five users) to the status of part 90 commercial users. For some answers and clarification we turned to Benn Kobb, AK4AV, who you long-time RAIN Report listeners will remember from his editing the FCC Tech News during the 90s; For decades Benn has edited the Experimental Radio News; and he also was a regular RAIN contributor during the 90s. In the early to mid 1990s Mark Thompson, WB9QZB penned a column entitled Bites from QZB. These were often controversial but always thought provoking commentaries. While the focus of this first Bites from QZB are issues concerning the 70CM (440 mHz) band in the Chicago area, the problems discussed may very well paralel those occurring in your area. Former RAIN reader, Scott Childers, W9CHI (formerly WD9FXP introduced Mark's first column. Back in the 1980s, the frequencies allocated to the 220 U.S. Amateur Radio Service were 220 to 225 mHz. In the late 1980s United Parcel Service (UPS) persuaded and cajoled the FCC to reallocate 220 to 222 mHz to commercial interests. UPS made a lot of noise about how much it needed those two mhz of spectrum to develop an Amplitude Compandered Side Band (ACSB) communications network. After all the wailing and gnashing of teeth had subsided and the dust had settled, UPS found the technology unworkable on those frequencies and abandoned the project! Art Reis, K9XI published his 220 Report during the early and mid 1990s until he ceased publishing it altogether later that decade. One of the notables Hap Holly, KC9RP featured on the RAIN Report during its 29-year run was Riley Hollingsworth, K4ZDH, Special Enforcement Counsel to the Federal Communications Commission. Riley was gracious enough to voice a weekly column on therainreport.com during the mid to late 90's that Hap dubbed "The FCC Enforcement Log with Riley Hollingsworth." A New Realization for Ham Radio HAPPY NEW YEAR! This is RAIN Hamcast podcast #83 for January 7th, 2023. I'm Will Rogers, K5WLR. "Technology has not only overtaken us, it has left us far behind; and we're having our bitter fights over the deck chairs on the Titanic." The words of Wayne Green, W2NSD. Does the name Wayne Green ring a bell with you? Wayne was founder of both 73 magazine and Radio Fun magazine. He published '73' for almost half the 20th century; Wayne passed in 2013, ten years ago. While Wayne had the reputation of being ham radio's "gloom-&-doomer", he showed a side of himself during a 1992 Dayton Hamvention forum few have seen or heard. This week we present Wayne Green, W2-Never Say Die-with an excerpt from his talk, "A New Realization for Ham Radio". We're going to make this RAIN Hamcast podcast a little festive with a reading Mike Jackson recorded in the Radio Amateur Information Network almost 30 years ago. It's a reading of A Ham's Christmas, written by Walter A. Tompkins, K6ATX. But just who is Mike Jackson really? Another voice often heard in the 90s during the RAIN Report was Chicagoan Angelo Polvere, KA9CSO. Angelo was heard in the late 80s writing and reading biographical pieces concerning those heard during the Bear Information Service that Hap Holly, KC9RP founded in 1985 for the Chicago-based Bear (Broadcast Employees Amateur Repeater). Angelo was later heard reading an occasional script for Hap's RAIN Report. Borrowing from the obituary published by the ARRL, National Association for Amateur Radio, "A hallmark of 73 was Wayne's iconic rambling and wide-ranging 'Never Say Die' editorials in which he rarely missed the opportunity to tweak the ARRL and its magazine competitors for their perceived shortcomings. There hardly was an issue that Greene would not confront; he expounded upon a variety of unconventional science, health and medical theories from cold fusion and landing on the moon to aides and cancer cures." In 1964, the Voice of America (VOA) commissioned Collins Radio to build three of its largest transmitters. The 821-A1 was capable of transmitting an impressive 250 KW A.M. between 3.95 and 26.5 MHz during the Cold War from the VOA relay site in DeLano, CA. Today he lives on a 250-acre farm with his wife and four remaining children...at one point he had nine at home. Joe grew up in south central Australia, 15 miles from Adelaide; became a software engineer as a teenager; moved his family to Tasmania in 2017. Joe has gained invaluable experience the past 25 years assisting Freedom Scientific, the U.S. company that developed JAWS (Job Access with Speech) a well-known speech screen reading Windows-based program for the blind. For many the installation of residential solar power has been met with mixed results. On one hand its solar pannels can provide a welcome respite from the local electrical grid; on the other, the close proximity of such a residential system often generates major radio frequency interference (RFI) across the HF spectrum. One Arizona ham who has found the cause and cure for this vexing RFI problem is Fred Bresani/W2HZ. Fred has an electrical background. He was first licensed in 1966 as OA4AAH in his native country of Peru; he was retested by the FCC to extra as W2HZ, his call today. Fred earned his BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Milwaukee School of Engineering in 1970, and his MBA in International Business from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1980. Over the years Fred has held positions of Power Systems Engineer, Project Engineer, Procurement Executive, Marketing/Sales Executive, and CEO. First a slight correction: While 29.610 to 29.690 MHz is allocated for 10-meter FM repeaters, it should be noted here that the traditional 10-meter FM repeater pairs total only four in all, 29.62, 64, 66 and 68; each with an input 100 kHZ down, some requiring PL access. According to Alex, he has three receive sites on his 10 FM machine, 2 that require a 146.2 hZ PL access; and a third receiver that doesn't. Well, one posetive indicator is the ten meter FM repeater sub-band. Some of you Are no doubt wondering "Ten meter repeaters?" There are ten repeater pairs spaced 10 kHZ apart from 29.610 to 29.700 mHZ. The input for each pair is 100 kHZ down. If you have ever seen a set of 2-meter repeater duplexers, you will readily understand why your average ten-meter FM repeater is set up with separate transmit and receive sites. One such repeater is the KQ2H Catskills mountains FM repeater on 29.620 mHZ. Its trustee is Alex Muzyka/KQ2H, a resident of the hamlet of Kerhonkson, New York. Accomplishments resulting from his 20-plus years working for the Federal Communications Commission included: Implementing the Vanity call sign system for the U.S. Amateur Radio Service; introducing the first volunteer amateur exams to the Dayton Hamvention; getting frequency coordination for VHF/UHF Amateur Radio repeaters; and starting the process of reducing and eventually eliminating Morse code as a requirement to become a ham operator. This is ClassicRAIN#33, posted Jan. 23, 2021; voiced by Will Rogers/K5WLR. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has kept a wary eye on the Amateur Radio Service for decades. And occasionally hams have worked within the Commission, making a 'name' for themselves without doing so on the HF bands. One Midwest ham who made a career working within the Commission got acquainted with it (not his choice) when he was nine years old. He's Ralph Haller/N4RH. The Classic RAIN Hamcast for 01-08-2021

This is ClassicRAIN#32, posted Jan. 9, 2021; voiced by Will Rogers/K5WLR. During the middle 1980s-1990s Angelo Polvere/KA9CSO was A highly respected member of the BEAR (Broadcast Employees Amateur Repeater) in the northwest Chicago suburb of Schaumburg. In those years Angelo was the mayor of Inverness, the Chicago suburb in which he still resides today. In the 90s you may have read his short skhetches in '73' magazine called the BEAR-ography. These were short profiles of fellow BEAR club members. He wrote and recorded them to be played on the weekly net dubbed the BEAR Information Service (BIS), produced by Hap Holly/KC9RP, creator of these Classic RAIN Ham Cast. Angelo's short audio profiles both entertained and informed the 90-plus folks who checked into the BIS via the BEAR repeater and linked repeaters in the northeastern IL. area weekly. In this ham cast you'll hear Angelo read one such sketch about club member Bill Itter/N9EWA. Then you'll hear Bill read a piece he wrote describing just how to publicize club activities. The Classic RAIN Hamcast for 12-13-2020

This is ClassicRAIN#30, posted Dec. 13, 2020;Westlink, better known today as the Amateur Radio Newsline, was in financial quicksand in 1985. Its Co-Founder was Bill Pasternak/WA6ITF in 1977. Eight years later RAIN Founder, Hap Holly/KC9RP, recorded his first interview with Bill, who was one of his mentors. In this Classic RAIN hamcast we'll excerpt some audio from that conversation with Bill. [1985 19M] Westlink was renamed the Amateur Radio Newsline in the late '80s. Bill wrote all the scripts for Westlink and Newsline for 38 years until his passing in 2015. He was one of two hams that mentored Hap Holly/KC9RP in the '80s. The Classic RAIN Hamcast for 11-27-2020

This is ClassicRAIN#29, posted Nov. 28, 2020. Those of us who are now retired, including RAIN Founder, Hap Holly/KC9RP, are experiencing what longevity means, i.e. seeing our friends in and out of ham radio becoming silent keys. One such friend and mentor who passed this fall was Ken Piletic/W9ZMR. Ken was known in the greater Chicago area for having faithfully maintained the mid western phone line service for decades for the Amateur Radio Newsline as far back as the early 80s when it was known as Westlink Radio. Ken was the driving force behind Orcats, the Old-Time Radio Collectors and Traders Society on 40 meters. In our tribute to Ken we're presenting four audio contributions he made for the RAIN Report and earlier. The first is from a 1989 interview of Ken by Steve Bower/KC0HF for Hap Holly/KC9RP's RP Report. Our second is a serious commentary Ken wrote and voiced for the RAIN Report in 1994 on "Slow Code". Our third piece is a fun commentary Ken wrote and voiced about "The Holey Hamfest Ticket" for the BEAR Information Service in 1988. Our fourth and last piece is a short humorous piece called "Wear Your Stinking Badge" Ken produced for the RAIN Report in 1994. This week we go back to 1988 for three excerpts from the BEAR Information Service, produced by Hap Holly/KC9RP prior to the RAIN Report that he authored from 1990 to 2019. Our first piece is a commentary Doug Weed/N3AIA read about Canada's proposal to reallocate part of the 440 amateur band. Have you ever thought of learning morse code via the written word? One Chicago ham did in 1988. Jim Georgias/W9JUG was the VEC Coordinator administrator for the Chicago-based DeVry VE program in 1988. Here is an excerpt from a 1988 RP Report with Jim about his ideas at the time behind what he called his "code recognition proposal. it was never adopted. In 1988 a commercial was produced to promote a suburban Chicago radio club; unfortunately it no longer exists; that promo was voiced by Paula Uscian/K9IR. The Classic RAIN Hamcast for 07-10-2020

This is Classic RAIN ham cast #23 posted July 11, 2020, voiced by Will Rogers/K5WLR. Last time we brought you the first of two excerpts from a rare 1988 audio interview with Amateur Radio pioneer, Leo Meyerson/W0GFQ. This time we conclude Glenn Baxter/K1MAN's conversation with Leo. [1988 P2 14M] Quoting from a 2011 obituary about this ham radio legend, published by the ARRL, the national organization: for Amateur Radio: "For his contributions to Amateur Radio Meyerson was named the 1997 Ham of the Year at the Dayton Hamvention. Meyerson collaborated with Jim Musgrove, K5BZH, on his autobiography, called In Tune with Leo. “Leo Meyerson is someone who really impressed me,” Musgrove told the ARRL. “He may not have been tall, but he was certainly a giant of a man." In 1927 Leo heard W9CHT, his first ham. That experience really captured his attention. In 1928, Leo got his ham license, W9GFQ. In those days there was no 0 call district. Continuing to read from the ARRL Obituary "In 1953, the company name (WRL) was changed to WRL Electronics, and then to Globe Electronics in 1956. In 1959 the company company was sold to Textron. Meyerson continued in the retail radio business with World Radio, getting back into manufacturing with Galaxy Electronics in 1962. Galaxy was sold to Hy-Gain in 1970. The Classic RAIN Hamcast for 05-15-2020

As we edge closer to summer in the United States there will be opportunities for ham radio to provide logistical and communications support for public service events--Covid19 notwithstanding. One of the earliest audio productions RAIN Founder, Hap Holly/KC9RP, pieced together consisted of two presentations dealing with organizing and handling communications for a public service event. In Chicago's northwest suburbs The Schaumburg Amateur Radio Club (SARC) assisted in 5-K. runs, marathons and parades going back 35-plus years. In 1985 two of their members, Steve McMinn/WD9EIC and Paul Bocci/K9NO, teamed up to provide some useful how-to's that are just as valid all these years later. The Classic RAIN Hamcast for 05-01-2020

This is Classic RAIN #18 released May 1, 2020; introduced by Will Rogers/K5WLR. Where were you on Friday, April 29, 1988? RAIN's Founder/Producer, Hap Holly/KC9RP, (along with thousands of others) was attending the 1988 Dayton Hamvention...his first. In those years the Hamvention was held at the Hara arena, both inside and out, often in rather wintery weather. After getting back from his first 3-day ham "show of shows", Hap filed the following audio report for the Chicago-based BEAR (Broadcast Employees Amateur Repeater) Information Service . (new equipment report from Roberto/WD9FXC) and report about a fire in the Royal Motel). At that Hamvention Hap conducted a number of interviewed inside his Hamvention booth. Short excerpts from a handful of them can be heard at this point. Hap later packaged them for his RP Report. [1988 18M] With cooperation from the Dayton Amateur Radio Assoc. The Classic RAIN Hamcast for 04-18-2020

This is Classic RAIN #17 for April 18, 2020, introduced by Will Rogers/K5WLR. In 1974 RAIN's Founder, Hap Holly/KC9RP, was graduated from Principia College in southern Illinois. One of his classmates was Rick Dearborn/N1CKU. Rick went on to become Radio Operations Manager for WCSN, an international 500 KW shortwave juggernaut, owned at the time by the Christian Science Publishing Society in Boston, MASS. Hap caught up with Rick at the 1988 Dayton Hamvention. [1988 10M] WCSN transmitted 500 kilowatts into a 300-foot-high sturba curtain from the state of Maine. That would certainly get your attention! The Classic RAIN Hamcast for 04-04-2020

This is Classic RAIN #16, hosted by Will Rogers/K5WLR. Due to some glitches with a new install of Windows 10, we missed the February 29, Leap Year Classic RAIN and those for March as well. We apologize for the missing ham casts. For the newcomers among you the mid to late 1980s were a turbulent time for ham radio, especially for 220 MHz enthusiasts. In the late 80s RAIN's Founder, Hap Holly/KC9RP, helped facilitate a National Teleconference Radio Net to promote the value of the 220 MHz ham band that the FCC had partially reallocated to the United Postal Service in the late 1980s. The 220 amateur band was shrunken from 220-225 MHz down to 222-225. During the 'warmup' to the nationwide "Save 220" ham cast, one veteran of the ham radio press expressed his perspective about the rocky road the 220 band had been down. He was the late outspoken Wayne Greene/W2NSD, who founded 73 magazine in 1960, and was publisher of it in the 80s. [1988 6M] I must remind you that Wayne's observations were voiced in the introduction to a "Save 220" National Teleconference Radio Net in 1988. ; it was introduced by RAIN Founder Hap Holly/KC9RP to promote interest in the 220 band in the late 80s, several years before the RAIN Report came to fruition. Editorial Note: "While activity on the 220 Amateur band has grown significantly over the last 30 years in major U.S. markets. i.e. Chicago, New York, SO. Cal. and the like, just spend time outside these populous areas, and you'll see how sparse 220 activity still is away from your major cities." This is ClassicRAIN#14 for January 31, 2020. Whether you live in the city or out in the country, you probably have found woodpeckers nesting in some of the strangest places; but none so strange as your HF receivers. There you'll find woodpeckers that don't sound like any others. Over-the-horizon woodpeckers were a real pest in the 80s. Bob Horavitz made a study of these high tech woodpeckers during the 80s. At the time Bob was Executive Secretary for ANARC, the Association of North American Radio Clubs. RAIN Founder, Hap Holly/KC9RP, caught up with Bob at the 1988 Dayton Hamvention. Relations between the U.S. Amateur Service and the Federal Communications Commission soured considerably in the late 1980s in the wake of the Commission's reallocation of the bottom two mHz of the 220-225 MHz Amateur band. Many felt the FCC was literally auctioning spectrum off to the highest bidder. And in fact, according to Ben Kobb/KC5CW, Founder and Publisher of the Federal Communications Tech News in Washington D.C., it would have liked to have done just that. RAIN Founder, Hap Holly/KC9RP spoke with Ben about his concerns in 1989. And so it was all those years Hap Holly/KC9RP produced the RAIN Report (from 1990-2019). The best holiday edition of the RAIN Report was aired 1996. This is Classic RAIN #10 for Dec. 7, 2019. Imagine paying a $5.00 fee to license your cell phone, pager, ham transceiver or CB radio! And if you were caught not licensing these devices with your state, you'd possibly pay a fine or serve time in prisson. In 1989 it was no joke in Illinois, especially to state Senator William Shaw, 34th District. Shaw wanted to license CB radios, beepers and cellular phones in Illinois thirty years ago!. Why, you ask? Here's a trivia question for you: Who is the only ham to be awarded lifetime President Emeritus for his presidency of both the American Radio Relay League (ARRL)from 1972-1982; and QCWA, the Quarter Century Wireless Assoc. from 1989-1994? Here's a clue: QCWA recognized this ham for 70 years of service to Amateur Radio in 2016. He's Harry Dannals/W2HD, a long-time resident of Charlottesville, Virginia now in his ...73rd... year as a ham. Incidentally, Harry was a driving force behind the no-code tech license. RAIN's Founder, Hap Holly/KC9RP had a lengthy conversation with Harry in March, 1993 shortly before Harry was awarded the prestigious 1993 Ham of the Year award by the Dayton Amateur Radio Assoc. at the Dayton Hamvention banquet that spring. CLASSICRAIN#6 for 10-11-19: One of the resources Hap Holly/KC9RP drew upon in his early years of producing audio ham radio programming was Bill Pasternak/WA6ITF, co-founder and driving force behind Westlink Radio, known today as the Amateur Radio Newsline. One of Bill's interviews Hap most cherishes was a short interview with former Sen. Berry Goldwater/K7UGA conducted in 1989 by national science reporter and familiar Amateur Radio Newsline voice in the 80s and 90s, Roy Neal/K6DUE. A number of voices that became familiar to our RAIN Report listeners in the 90s were first heard on the BEAR Information Service (BIS) in suburban Chicago in the late 80s. One of those familiar voices was Blair Alper/KA9SEQ, an Iowa ham whose ham roots were as the trustee for the so-called Lid Far 220 repeater in the Chicago suburb of Oak Park before he relocated to Iowa in the 90s. This is CLASSICRAIN#5: During the 30 years Hap Holly/KC9RP produced the RAIN Report, he encountered hundreds of ham radio commentaries - after all commentaries are like 'butts' everyone has one! Hap shared some of these op-ed pieces with his RAIN listeners over the years-like these three: The first was written and voiced by Jack Schmidling /NR9Q, a net control station in the late 80'S for the Amateur Radio Forum on 3950 kHZ (80 meters). 9:00 PM Central time Thursdays back in the late 80's. Jack gave this guest commentary a unique name: No Code and Ham Radio Moonies. Our second "no nonsense" guest commendary was penned and read by Ron Kritzman/K9ID, Ron did not apply any title to it but it remains one of the classic op-ed pieces Hap shared in the late 80s. Our third and final thoughtful commentary was written and delivered by a ham in the greater Chicago area late in the 80s; Jim Beedle/W9NIN, who was a morning announcer on the Satellite Music network 30 years ago. THIS is Classic RAIN #4. For the 30 years Hap Holly/KC9RP produced the RAIN Report, he borrowed liberally from the dozens of forums held each year at the Dayton Hamvention in Dayton, Ohio. Occasionally Hap featured talks from the DARA(Dayton Amateur Radio Association. banquet during the 90's. Held in downtown Dayton Saturday night during the Hamvention each year , several hams were awarded what many called the "Oscars of Amateur Radio" by DARA. Here in our 4th Classic RAIN episode we'll bring you two short presentations from the April 24, 1993 DARA banquet, featuring Dick Janson/WD4FAB, and Robert Adams/WA9ZMO. This is Classic RAIN 3: ; Here in CLASSICRAIN3 you'll hear a special report that was filed by 220 Notes News Letter Editor, Art Reis/K9XI that will bring back painful memories to our long-time 220 enthusiasts; and we'll hear some tips on good repeater operating practices that are just as valid today as they were when these were voiced 30 years ago. In 1985 a Chicago-area repeater known as the BEAR, (the Broadcast Employees Amateur Repeater) became Chicago's most listened to machine Wednesday nights with it weekly BEAR Information Service, coordinated by Hap Holly/KC9RP. A major contributor to the B-I-S was Art Reis/K9XI, a driving force nationwide in the 220 community. In the 1980s the future of the 220-225 mHZ amateur band was in serious jeopardy. UPS, the United Parcel Service, was seeking a continuous band of frequencies for its untested ACSB (Amplitude Compandered SideBand technology. In the spring of 1989 Art wrote and voice a piece about the related Congreshional hearing on the FCC in docket 8714, tthat would eventually reallocate 220-222 mHZ from the U.S. 220 band for what eventually would become abandoned spectrum by UPS. Controversy raged then as it does today as to what needs to be done to keep the U.S. Amateur Radio Service viable. The first was "The Other Side of the Story", voiced by David Miller/NZ9E, a familiar voice on the RAIN Report during the 90s. Following Dave's commentary is an opposing op-ed piece filed just days later voiced by Mark Thompson/WB9QZB. Mark was the Founder of the Northern IL. Packet Council over 40 years ago.
